A review study of waterborne intestinal parasites in Iraq

Abstract: Drinking safe water contributes significantly to establishing the quality of human life. The holy Quran, in Surah Al-Anbiya (20:30), states: “We made from water every living thing”, more than 3.4 million people die estimates WHO that as a result of water-related diseases every year, making it the top cause of sickness and death worldwide. Among these deaths, about 1.4 million are children. According to the World Health Organization, 60% of people in underdeveloped countries do not have access to clean drinking water, and over 80 human diseases are transmitted through water. Worldwide, outbreaks caused by contaminated community water systems have the potential to infect a large number of people. Waterborne infections are widespread. This study focused on the database of waterborne parasite studies conducted in Iraq. The parasite classes known as protozoa include Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Chilomastix sp., Iodamoeba butschlii, Naegleriae sp., Coccidia sp., Acanthamoeba sp., Cryptosporidium parvum, Cryptosporidium muris, Blantidium sp., and Entamoeba coli.
