Abstract: FMD is an acute viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals and is well known due to its zoonotic infectious nature with severe economic impact all over the world. The objective of this research was to search the rate and the clinical manifestations of FMD in the cattle and small ruminants in different areas of Iraq such as Al-Dooly City, Karbalaa, Wasit Province, Al-Qassim City, Al-Neel Valley and other. Questionnaires were administered on 250 farms, specializing in cattle, sheep and goat farming systems. The clinical signs noted were thus as follow: Salivation; Limb lameness; Feverish; Oral ulceration; Coughing; and Diarrhea The severity measured as mild, moderate and severe.
The study established that it affects 56% of patients with mild manifestations, 32% with moderate and 12% severe; salivations and fever observed most constantly. Since p<0.05, there were differences in the regions whereby symptoms were distributed or severe as shown below; moreover, only 38% of the assessed animals were vaccinated, which revealed the lack of other antisepsis activities. Thus, the study indicates that mild case prevalence remains high, although low vaccination coverage and biosecurity compromise disease control.
These findings are in sync with global practices stressing the need for better monitoring and reporting, integrated communication system, and more effective approaches in vaccinations of FMD in Iraq. Subsequent studies into the environmental and management causes of sickness transmission is advisable so as to guide the policies or controls.
